OIKONOMOU I. ATHANASIOS

The Ophthalmic Surgeon - Oculist OIKONOMOU I ATHANASIOS, father’s name: Ioannis, mother’s name: Vassiliki, was born in 1975 in Thessaloniki. He graduated from the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Military School for Corps Officers in 2000 and was sworn as health officer of the Hellenic Police.

He specialized in ophthalmology at the 1st University Ophthalmology Clinic of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, at AHEPA University General Hospital of Thessaloniki, and was, subsequently, trained in the sub-specialty of refractive (laser) surgery at VEMMO (Vardinogianneio Laboratory of Eye Transplants and Microsurgery) of the University of Crete under Professor Ioannis Pallikaris, as well as at the department of refractive surgery and cornea of Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, as refractive surgery fellow.

Since March 2008, he worked first as a registrar and, subsequently, as director of the ophthalmology department of the Central Clinic of Thessaloniki of the Hellenic Police, at the Police Headquarters.

Since 2010, he is a scientific associate of the corneal department of the 1st Ophthalmology University Clinic of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, at AHEPA University General Hospital of Thessaloniki.

In November 2014, he was sworn as doctor of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, completing his doctoral thesis with honors, which had the title: “The role of corneal pachymetry in glaucoma”.

Since 2015, he is an elected member of the board of the Society of Ophthalmology of Northern Greece, with participation in the organization of scientific workshops in Northern Greece, as well as of the Panhellenic Ophthalmology Congress of 2016, in Thessaloniki.
